The opportunity: Reaching audiences across platforms

With a broad scope of movies and series in its portfolio, Nordisk Film sought a video streaming solution to distribute its content directly to viewers via a subscription model. As Nordisk Film’s target group consumes video content on different types of devices, the entertainment company required a multi-platform application that operates across the following:

  • Mobile (Android/iOS),
  • Connected TV (AndroidTV, AppleTV),
  • Smart TV (LG WebOS, Samsung Tizen),
  • Various Web browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge).

The Challenge: Ensuring smooth integration while reducing complexity

Launching a new multi-platform streaming application is a complex and sophisticated process that needs to meet specific timelines. Nordisk Film selected leading global media services provider Red Bee Media and established provider of front-end, custom, multiscreen solutions Better Software Group to develop and launch Nordisk Film+.

A key challenge that needed to be addressed was integrating the front-end activities with the other technology partners involved in the project, while reducing overall complexity. To overcome this challenge, Better Software Group placed adapters right on the front-end side to enable direct communication between all parties, simplifying the solution and facilitating the maintenance and development of the project.

 

The Solution: Next-generation OTT and front-end capabilities

The application designed for the Nordic entertainment brand was created through the close collaboration of Red Bee Media, Better Software Group and Nordisk Film. Nordisk Film harnessed the full range of Red Bee Media’s managed OTT services as a part of the Red Bee Pulse offering to seamlessly bring its new subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) service to market and futureproof the company’s streaming proposition. Its unique content offering spanning the best of Danish cinema and a dedicated children’s section is handled and delivered through Red Bee Media’s best-in-breed OTT capabilities, including digital rights management (DRM), content management expertise, and content delivery network services.

Better Software Group delivered an intuitive front-end for the multi-platform solution, available on the web, mobile (iOS & Android), Apple TV, Android TV, and Smart TV (Samsung and LG). The front-end solution is highly responsive, sophisticated, and user-friendly, integrating smoothly with all parts of the Nordisk Film+ application and enabling users to enjoy a high-quality customer experience.

To ensure the seamless running of the project, the technology partners worked closely with Nordisk Film to assess its needs and discuss options.

The multi-platform VOD application that was delivered benefits from the following:

  • Contains three content channels: Nordisk Film+, Dansk Filmskat and Kids,
  • Provides dedicated pages that match the channel brand,
  • Includes EU portability to enable end users travelling within the EU to have access to the same content as in the country where the subscription was purchased,
  • Includes filters, pagination, and internal search results,
  • Enables browser caching,
  • Is available in English and Danish (soon in Norwegian, Swedish, and Finnish languages)
  • Includes keyword analysis and publishing tracking.
