New Frontiers in Media Localization

We will start with our very own Diana Sánchez, Business Development Access Services, who will chair a panel “Breaking Down Barriers: Achievements and Challenges in Worldwide Accessibility” with speakers from Channel 4, SBS and ARTE.

Our audio description expert at Red Bee, Marie Campbell, will share her work experience during two sessions: “Access Insights” and “Audio Description Fireside Chat.”

Great content is about great storytelling. At its heart, in providing access to the visuals of that great content, audio description is, in its own way, about storytelling, too. By distilling language, describers aim to provide, if not an equal experience, then an equitable one, describing in gaps in the dialogue important visual elements for blind and partially sighted audiences.

But AD has a story, too. In fact, AD has many stories. Spanning three acts, this presentation will look at one page of AD’s rich history: broadcast AD in the UK. We will explore the ingredients that go into making high-quality AD and how they have evolved over time.

Act 1 will dip into broadcast AD’s past and how it all began 25 years ago, with small volumes of pre-recorded content transmitted to a sample audience. Act 2 will look at how these origins continue to inform present-day innovations like live audio description for broadcast. Finally, in Act 3, we will look to the future and how synthetic voices, LLMs and human agency might shape AD from now on.

    Audio Description Excellence Lead

Within this year’s theme of access and inclusion, our panel brings together leading audio description experts from around the world to provide first hand insight into the profession. Our panellists are experienced audio description writers, voicers, trainers and consumers. The growth of online platforms and changes in regulation around the world have led to a recent boom in audio description. This objective of this panel is to provide space for an interactive discussion of the evolution of the art of description, explore approaches to the training of describers and innovation in editorial and technical aspects and to discuss the important challenges the industry faces in terms of inclusion in production processes. The panel aims to provide the opportunity for informal and detailed discussion among some of the most experienced writers in the industry.
